So What Have We Been Learning ?

Phew ! Its the end of term. We’ve been working really hard to finish all our project tasks and we met in Mrs D’s office to catch up and think about what we’d done and where to next (we can keep working on the project next year with the seniors). We had an exciting conversation about all the different things each group had done and what everyone had learnt. A lot of us had learnt different things and we want to share what we know with other people and learn more new stuff. We decided to record some of what we’d learnt – like a report so… here’s a short video of Mrs D being proud of us and everyone thinking of one good thing they learned.
This is our report to Mr Sommerville in Christchurch about working on the Microsoft Innovative Schools project (our awesome video is in the OTHER blog) We used Microsoft Powerpoint. A lot.

We made a blog to collect all our information about changes in schooling for our Grandparents, Parents and classmates. That means we had to look back 100 years, 50 years, 25 years and look at what’s happening now. We wanted to compare the changes and look at why schooling was like that and why it changed. We wanted to get people’s attention so we thought of interesting ideas and we decided to make some avatars using voki cause it’s easy. We made the vokis say what we wanted from each generation. We made a quick video to show how we did it and uploaded it to teachertube(Mrs D had to join so we could use her login) – but we think we could have used some screen shots of voki to show it better. We might do that next time.

I was looking through you tube for a video about what school was like 30 years ago and I found this video. It shows some of the things our parents might remember from the times when they were at school like the 60s, the 70s and the 80s … like hairstyles and tv programmes and sayings. It gives us an idea of what it might have been like back then and it would give our parents a trip down memory lane. It would help us get to them remember what things they did and what was cool and I think if they remember what living in the times was like back then – they might think about how the schools needed to be back then because the technology was different back then, everything was different. Now I’ve noticed the technology is increased and we get introduced to new things almost every day it was different back then because they didn’t have such a wide range of technology for a start !!!
Look at this video its only 2. minutes.

Searching Through Photos -Rebecca.S

Me Emma and Nathen wanted to see how the school has changed since it was built. We wondered about photos and if the museum might have any thing we asked Mrs Dyet about it and she made us ring the musem to see if we could come down to have a look. The museum said sure, so Mrs Dyet took us down and we met the museum teacher and the archivist showed us how to search through photo files, we found photos of the old school Principals and a photo of the contructing of the school.
The school pictures were kind of useful because they showed how the school buildings have changed to suit the childrens learning, now we have got more class rooms and a new ARTS and LEISURE CENTER (A.L.C). We actullay wanted more photos of children working and learning so we asked Mr McCabe and he showed us to the school reunion photos. We spent the whoel morning going through them, we found some photos that will be useful but they were mainly formal class photos.
I think that they didn’t take a lot of photos in class rooms back then because back then cameras and developing film was expensive and not every class room had caneras like we do now.
Our group’s next step is to sort the photos out so we can put them in the video for our part. We might have to ask people if we can put there photos in the video and the blog. I’m feeling excited about this project and also nervous if we don’t find enought photos or the right photos.

I’ve just come into the project and had my first workshop. I’ve never used a camera or put anything in a blog before so I feel kind of nervous. This is easy – you just log in as Mrs Dyet and write your message in a post. I’m looking forward to working in my group and having a go with the camera. I think its going to be fun.

About Filming – by Luke

Mr Owen drew some pictures on the board to show us how to frame people in an interview. You always need to eye contact with BOTH eyes, you need some space for them to be looking into and head and shoulders is good unlees you want to see the back ground. It’s also important to have a “Handle” at the start and end of your filming. A Handle is waiting 5 seconds before you start talking and don’t end suddenly – you let the camera keep filming. It’s important for editing so you can cut some back and link it up with other stuff.
